Expressing and embracing the beauty of Islamic art
Geometric patterns are a fundamental element of Islamic art, alongside calligraphy and vegetal patterns. These abstract patterns are not only adorned on the facades of Islamic architecture but also serve as the primary decorative motif on various objects.
Geometric patterns in Islamic art derive from simple forms like circles and squares, interwoven into intricate designs. These patterns, while based on strict geometry, also display a sense of freedom in their ornate complexity. The repetition and symmetry in Islamic geometric ornamentation allow for endless expansion and incorporation of diverse decorative elements. The fundamental shapes used as building blocks for intricate designs include circles, squares, star patterns, and polygons.
